Unchained Tragedy
The Bible warns that in the last days violent times will come. It is not enough to just know this prophetic fact, but how do we as a society get to that point? As we look at where we are as a civilization, we are struck by the amount of immorality and specifically the kind of immorality expressed in violent behavior toward other human beings. Our condition is not without the evidence of our conditioning. There are certain things that we did to ourselves in the names of many other causes that produce the reality of a broken society. Whether it is school shootings, gang violence, drug addiction proliferation, or just public displays of anger, we are clearly not the people we were a century ago.
Our self-destructive behavior is also self-imposed. We have unchained ourselves from a standard of morality. How? By doing a little at a time, a little here and a little there. Each act of unmooring this society from God’s Law added to the pot of chaotic behavior we see today.
Nehemiah 9:26 (YLT) — 26 “‘And they are disobedient, and rebel against Thee, and cast Thy law behind their back, and Thy prophets they have slain, who testified against them, to bring them back unto Thee, and they do great despisings,”

Let’s look at the most obvious. Let’s start with removing prayer from school. Why would removing prayer from school change society? That is answered in what prayer does for us psychologically. Prayer reminds us that we are all accountable to a Higher Being. Remove prayer and we also remove a consciousness of the One we pray to.
Let’s now take out the display of the Ten Commandments from our schools. What psychological effect will this have? The Ten Commandments is the basic codex of all morality. It reminds us of what is good and what is evil. Couple that with the removal of prayer and we have a desensitization of our children to morality and the One who holds us accountable. Let’s take one more example to establish a clear pattern.
In 1973 the Supreme Court allowed for legal abortions throughout America. What do we expect our children, who grow up in a society where the availability of abortion is as natural as the availability of a salad, to actually look like? Abortion violates one of those commandments we took down which was established by the One we prayed to and who holds us accountable for our actions. Now we have a desensitization of a culture to its God and His standard of morality with a clear display through the whimsical murder of the unborn. We have created the atmosphere where human value is determined by what state of development you happen to be in.
Along with these and many more un-moorings, what should we expect from children growing up in a society like this? Should we expect that everyone has the same idea of morality as we do? Why would that be the case when we have seen to it that they were disconnected from the only transcendent standard of morality and its Progenitor? People like to blame things like violent movies and video games but those are mere symptoms of a society already desensitized, else no one would desire to watch them or play them. No, our problem is an unchained tragedy!!
